Trishaw Riders @ Little India

Trishaw Riders @ Little India

Trishaw riders began initially as rickshaw pullers. With the evolution of rickshaws to the three-wheeled trishaws, many became trishaw riders often using the vehicle as their own home or for hawking food.

Trishaw riders were primarily Chinese immigrants who had worked as coolies or rickshaw pullers. Many trishaw riders can converse fairly fluently in three dialects as well as a little English. Most of these rickshaw pullers came to Singapore around the period of World War II, with the bulk arriving during the late 1930s. Most of those who took on the job had little skills and needed to earn a living fast. Many modified their trishaws so that it often served as a roving hawker stall as well.

Costs & Charges
A bicycle attached to a comfortable carriage used to cost S$120 but now costs about S$600, with tyres being replaced every 4 months at a cost of S$5 each. Trishaw riders earn about S$10-S$20 a day, starting work at 5:00 am and sometimes finishing at mid-night. He knows the city well and usually wears a broad brimmed Chinese hat to protect him from the weather. There are about 100 trishaw riders in Singapore now compared to the 9,000 in force 40 years ago.

Today's trishaw riders serve mainly tourists and can earn up to S$1,200 monthly with a trip between Westin Stamford and Orchard Road costing about S$40 for 2 passengers. A large proportion of the tourist rides are taken by Japanese, who are driven through the historical sites of Singapore, the blaring music of radios boxed into the trishaws' seats and their brightly coloured lights announcing their presence. Pick up point is at Albert Centre Market and Food Centre, off Rochor Road and these tours costs about S$15 per person.

Stamford (CT) (Images of America)

Founded in 1641, Stamford is one of the oldest towns in New England. Although once a stopping place on the stagecoach route between New York and Boston, Stamford remained largely agrarian until the coming of the railroad in 1848. The resulting influx of immigrants and industrial expansion that followed transformed Stamford from a rural community into a bustling city. The images in this book date from the Civil War through the end of World War I, from the earliest available photographs to the established use of the automobile. It is a time that saw the gristmills become factories and old frame trading posts be replaced by imposing brick structures. During these years the people of Stamford supported the Union Cause and voted for Grover Cleveland; they built new homes, churches, schools, and parks; they established a hospital and a library; they joined the YMCA, went yachting, and always turned out for a parade.
