Day 17 Aboard the CFC Blue-Green Machine

Day 17 Aboard the CFC Blue-Green Machine

June 30, 2010

Somewhere in Eastern Oregon—This is one of the many beautiful scenes that I was able to imperfectly photograph along the route of our journey. As usual, the best ones (images, scenes...) got away...

The Cascadia Freedom Caravan returned to the Cascadia Pacific Northwest region today (June 30/July1). Though many were tired, the travelers were in mostly good spirits. And while most were glad to be home, I think there is also some pain of loss and separation in seeing the end of an amazing journey, and as friends new and old go separate ways.

For me, the trip was somewhat of a pilgrimage. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to spend time with so many amazing people. I made good connections and had some awesome conversations. For me, it was an educational and transformative experience.

Both the Allied Media Conference and the US Social Forum were worthwhile. I learned a lot at both. I learned about myself, and about the world. I learned about the work of making the world a better place for all people.

Detroit is an amazing place, full of contrasts, and a past of conflict. In the midst of the chaos of economic instability, there exists an amazing spirit of resilience, opportunity, and even beauty as communities learn to adapt and grow despite the presence of unfavorable social trends and pressures.

I have nearly 3,000 photographs from the trip. I hope to compile a few sets to tell the story, including a set of the best ones. That is after I get some much needed rest!

Took me ages to find the section in the library with the books I needed. The little treasure hunt tired me out so I sat between the bags and books and read through the books, when a guy appeared from nowhere! It could have been that I was so engrossed I didn't see him appear but I like to think he just appeared out of thin air. He sat with me for afew minutes and told me about Persian history...I love it when people have an immense amount of knowledge on the one topic and you can just hear their passion when they talk about it. Anyway he left me with afew titles to try out...and then he just disappeared...I don't have time to actually read the stuff he suggested but if you have time would you please try out:
Caravan of Dreams
Tales of the Dervishes
Mulla Nasrudin - This one is supposed to be really funny.

They're all by Octagon Press and from what he said I think they all by Idries Shah....he was also quite good-looking and single if anyone is interested in that aspect...go sit in the history section of All Saints and he may reappear.

Sorry about the quality...people seemed to just appear everytime I wanted to take a picture, got a very weird look from someone when they saw me take this, so I nodded and said 'Did you know in history teachers tend to focus on the how and not the why?' - if people are going to think i'm weird I might aswell be a good weirdo, and weirdos who give out random statements are the best :

I'm 21 and am about to graduate from National Aviation Academy with my Airframe and Powerplant licenses. I've had my Z28 for about 2 years and have a couple nice mods. 17 inch; SS wheels with Falken tires, Optima Yellow Top, K and N CAI, Magnaflow 3 Inch catback, Dyno tuned to 280HP and 320Lb-Ft at the wheels, March underdrive crank pulley, Tremec T-56 with steel forks and carbon fiber synchros, ZOOM clutch, BMR springs, BMR STB, BMR boxed SFC's, Tokico shocks, 1LE swaybar, 1LE intake elbow, racing seats, AutoMeter tach/shift light, Jammin stereo with CDT EuroSports up front powered by an Alpine V12 and an Audiobahn 10 in the back powered by a JL 250/1. It's also got clear marker lights with LED bulbs all the way around. I bought a NOS 350 emblem from a '69 and put it where the old Z28 emblem used to be on the back, next to my chrome Bowtie :) The odometer reads well over 200K miles and is daily driven and occasionaly makes a pass down the 1/4. Best time is a 13.8 with a stock clutch and no drag slicks. Me, my dad and my sister all drove 93 Z28's until my sisters overheated for the second time after I installed new heads and valvetrain and was sold. Me and my dad are still rockin' the 93 6 speed Z28's while my sis rides in a 99 Firebird.

My 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

My 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

The first photo of my own car I've posted on Flickr. This is my '01 Ford Explorer Sport. I bought it brand-new Aug '01 with only 13 miles. I've had it for almost 9 years now & currently has 104,500 miles (4-1-2010).
Throughout my ownership, I have done alot of modifications that include:
- AEM Cold-air intake
- 20"Centerline Tracer wheels ( Billet... NOT CHROME!)
- Falken tires
- Billet grille
- Lowered it 2" (Makes the actual ride quality suffer but it handles so much better, doesn't feel top heavy)
- Painted front bumper
- Kenwood sound system complete with IPOD-to-stereo connector & Sirius Satellite radio (now canceled but still there)
Since I got out of the Military (2008) & went back to college full-time I haven't done anything major to her in almost 3 years but I still take care of her & have only had one major problem in 9 years. Comes to show that if you take care of your car, it'll take care of you!
Don't get me wrong, I think I am ready to move on to another ride, but realistically I know I can't afford a new car for at least another year or 2, so I'm confident that for the time being, my "Xploder" will serve me just fine! Let me know what y'all think

Canadian Tire Savings Account

canadian tire savings account

    savings account
  • A bank account that earns interest

  • a bank account that accumulates interest

  • An account with a bank or financial institution which pays interest on balances held, usually once or twice per year, the amount of interest paid usually depends on to the amount of money in the account and the 'base rate' of the Bank of England.

  • Savings accounts are accounts maintained by retail financial institutions that pay interest but cannot be used directly as money (for example, by writing a cheque). These accounts let customers set aside a portion of their liquid assets while earning a monetary return.

  • Canadian Tire Corporation, Limited is one of Canada's 35 largest publicly traded companies and operates an inter-related network of businesses engaged in retailing (hardgoods, apparel and petroleum) and services (financial and automotive).

I just had to LAUGH when the bank told me-PROUDLY- that I was going to get a 1% return on my savings account.. y'know, the retirement account?

I actually took the time to print the screen, cut the important parts, and draw the words on my mousepad, post and share this.

If inflation is currently at 3% (some say more), and the savings account rate is 1%, then I LOSE 2% every year.

We are better off buying cans of tuna, or bottles of SEX LUBE than saving this money!

And so honey, that's why we have all those bottles in the garage- I'm saving for retirement.

When I saw that there was a 'savings account' feature at my post office in BearCity (my Animal Crossing town), I wondered what the point was. Getting a tissue box for saving 1,000,000 bells didn't sound too rewarding. After trying it out anyway, and gradually adding more and more bells to my account, I got this letter in the mail. It's not a high interest rate, maybe 1% at best, but with no interest home loans from Tom Nook, it all evens out in the end.

Ok god knows how the sky turned out PINK (FTW) I guess thats the beauty of film. Set this up after we had been out on a lil session light - painting along the river on the first night of Lake District camping trip this bank holiday weekend. As we retired back to the tents for a few drinks I left this going for what must be around 30mins maybe more.

Literally the only lighting in this shot is the 2D Maglight used at the begining of the shot to focus, any light from tents around campite etc and the moon peeking over the hull like ridge of Yewbarrow. I would have of course liked to have lit it better but one it was about 2am (and I was tired and a lil tipsy), two I didnt know who's car it was, three I didnt wanna disturb anyone and finally I just had to have a shot so F**K it !!

Went with my dad to Fredericksburg to pick up an old Duster that he's going to part out. It was pretty trashed. Looks like it hadn't been inspected for over a decade and had a sweet bumper sticker that I remember from my life in the 80's in the Tidewater area. Some rail line thing.

Anyway, it took a long time- the damn thing had a flat tire and thankfully, there was another dude around to help out, a really strong gentleman that was able to make sure we could drag a car dolly up a hill and push the Duster onto it.

Car Tyre Nitrogen

  • a common nonmetallic element that is normally a colorless odorless tasteless inert diatomic gas; constitutes 78 percent of the atmosphere by volume; a constituent of all living tissues

  • Nitrogen ( ) is a chemical element that has the symbol N, atomic number of 7 and atomic mass 14.00674 u. Elemental nitrogen is a colorless, odorless, tasteless and mostly inert diatomic gas at standard conditions, constituting 78.08% by volume of Earth's atmosphere.

Aurora Borealis and Milky way

Aurora Borealis and Milky way

It was a tough choice what picture to upload first. I was clear that it has to be shot of Northern lights, but didnt know which one. So at the end I went with this one that is my favourite, along with 100's of others that are also my favourite. This has a special place on my hard drive, because if you stare at it long enough you might just make out the milky way, and also because this shot has a blue colour in the Aurora, and blue colour isnt as common as the other colours are. It basically represents Nitrogen in the atmosphere.

Now this natural phenomena is absolutelly phenomenal. I would say, that everyone has to see it at least once in their lifetime, but I have to add a small print part and warn you, that it is highly addictive. Thats why I did 5202kilometers (3250miles) in my hire car on such a dinky island that Iceland is. I would like to point out that I wasnt chasing Aurora, but a clear patch in the sky, through which I could see it. I can not moan too much about it ( Never stops me though) as I have been warned about the fatal attraction that is between Iceland and the cloud cover of northern hemosphere. But would I listen?

Anyway, this is one of the 100's shots I got during my best two hours of my life. No photo can ever do justice to the light show, and certainly no photo of mine. Icelanders dont seem at all moved by this phenomena ( I only encountered one icelandic guy that loved it), but then they dont seem to be moved by much. Except earthquakes. But about their warmness, friendliness and hospitality (or the lack of) maybe later.

I wonder if for people in nordic coutries that experience Northern lights, this phenomena is what is overcast drizzly/rainy weather for the great british public. I wonder if people's eyes that live in very hot,dry and sunny climate light up, when watching documentaries like Coronation street or Emmerdale and see the weather. I have seen few times on "Ice road truckers" amazing display of Aurora, and no one (except me) seems to notice. I have seen it four times and didnt get tired of it. It is different everytime and I LOVE IT! In fact I have the guys from the car hire company on speed dial.

To the shot: It has been taken with a fisheye lens, hence the distortion. For Anal Annies: I know the horizont isnt level. This is due to me wanting to capture the full lengh of "rainbow" of the aurora.

And as previously mentioned, all my images had their quality turn down due to ugly people using and abusing my work.
